You will never see a Corporate Communications subcommittee member without a laptop. The reason is simple: we are constantly typing away and editing the different proposals, electronic direct mail (eDMs), advertising slogans or presentation materials, both for the 4 flagship events that NTU-IIC hosts each year and any external communications the club has with its various stakeholders. Naturally, each of us are still in the growing phase, and we are constantly learning new ways to communicate our thoughts professionally and respectfully, through the careful crafting of sentences and combinations of words.

 

We have had two sessions of learning together, with the first session held before recess week. It had focused on how we should edit documents and write articles. After all, Corporate Communications is not just a ‘regulatory’ body where communication standards are maintained; it is a place where we can reach out to members of NTU-IIC and beyond about the club’s activities and interesting investment news or insights. All of our subcommittee members are already writing wonderful articles that will soon be uploaded onto this official NTU-IIC website, so do look out for them!

 

For the second session, held on 17th October, the focus was split between article writing again and how to be a good Emcee for our respective events (and for personal development). We had a productive session as the committee successfully delegated the different writing duties amongst ourselves. However, the most interesting section was the Emcee ‘training’ session, where each of us had to read out a speech excerpt.

 

Being an Emcee requires quick wit and fast reaction time, elegance, professionalism, confidence, and most importantly, a good voice; hence, the activity was supposed to help us discover the intonations, stresses and tonal variations we unconsciously use in normal speech, so that we are more aware of how we can manipulate our voices for the role of an Emcee. The funny thing was, the speech excerpts were from Charlie Chaplin’s ‘The Great Dictator Speech’ and Peter Dinklage’s ‘Don’t Wait Like Me’, both originally spoken with great fervor, which also makes it highly difficult for their speakers to express them well without good rhythm and energy behind their voices. Yet, all the subcommittee members did very well in their interpretations. After trying out the excerpts, we went on to hear the originals and did a group evaluation on the characteristics of each of our voices.

 

As the flagship events slowly ramp up their tempos towards the second semester, there will surely be more work for the Corporate Communications team, but we are all looking forward to how we can bring more news and updates to you.
